In view of raising awareness on the Human Trafficking issue among officers involved in the law enforcement agencies in Sri Lanka, the International Organization for Migration (IOM) in association with the Ministry of Defence (MOD) conducted a two-day training program on "Identifying and Responding to Human Trafficking" on 29th and 30th November 2022, at the Movenpick Hotel in Colombo 03.
The training programme covered the areas of introduction to human trafficking, the status of human trafficking in Sri Lanka, the international/ regional and local legal framework, the TIP report, victim identification/ investigation and prosecution along with some case studies. These sessions were conducted by Mr Nipuna – Project Coordinator (Protection Unit), Ms Minoli – Senior Coordinator (Protection Unit) and Ms Michelle – Senior Coordinator (Protection Unit) from the IOM, and the guest lecturers were Mr Navaratne Bandara - President’s Counsel (Former Senior Additional Solicitor General) and Mr Sugath Amarasinghe - Chief Inspector of Police (Officer in Charge Human Trafficking Smuggling and Maritime Crime Investigation Division).
At the latter part of the training programme, a Q & A session was conducted by the guest lectures and at the end the Major General Ruwan Kulatunga (Rtd) – Chief of National Intelligence graced the occasion and each participant of the training programme was awarded with a certificate.
