AN AWARENESS SESSION FOR SENIOR MILITARY OFFICERS ON HUMAN TRAFFICKING

On 7th June 2024 , an awareness session on human trafficking was conducted from 0900 hrs to 1230 hrs at the Galle Face Hotel. The session, titled "Awareness Session for Senior Military Officers," was organized by the National Anti-Human Trafficking Task Force (NAHTTF) Sri Lanka in collaboration with the International Organization for Migration (IOM) Sri Lanka.

The event was graced by the presence of General Kamal Gunaratne WWV RWP RSP USP ndc psc MPhil, Secretary of Defence, and the Chair of the National Anti-Human Trafficking Task Force. The distinguished attendees included the Chief of Defence Staff, Commander of the Navy, Commander of the Air Force and senior military officers.

Conducting this programme for high-ranking officials underscores the importance of addressing human trafficking with a holistic approach.

Additional Solicitor General Mrs. Harippriya Jayasundara, President Counsel, Senior Deputy Solicitor General Mr. Dileepa Peeris, State Counsel Mr. Shakthi Jagodaarachchi, and State Counsel Mr. Sajith Bandara conducted insightful discussions during the session.

The purpose of this event was to educate and make the most senior military officials aware of this heinous crime as it has an indirect effect on national security.

This session marks a significant step in the ongoing efforts to counter human trafficking in Sri Lanka, highlighting the collaborative efforts of various national and international agencies in safeguarding human rights and enhancing National Security.

Major General Ruwan Kulatunga RSP ndu psc, the Chief of National Intelligence and Head of the Officials Committee of NAHTTF, concluded the event by thanking all participants, resource personnel, IOM for their collaboration and unwavering support throughout this event and in the fight against Human Trafficking.
