The National Anti-Human Trafficking Task Force (NAHTTF), in collaboration with the International Organization for Migration (IOM), successfully launched a nationwide media campaign aimed at raising awareness on trafficking in persons. Supported by the Government of Japan, the initiative marks a significant step forward in Sri Lanka’s ongoing efforts to combat human trafficking and protect vulnerable populations.
The campaign, officially launched on 24 June 2025 in Colombo, features impactful television and radio messages broadcast across major channels, as well as billboards displayed in targeted districts. These messages, drawn from real-life stories of trafficking survivors, are designed to alert the public to the dangers and signs of human trafficking whether for forced labour, sexual exploitation, child labour, or forced criminality in cyber scamming compounds.
Addressing the gathering, Air Vice Marshal Mr. Sampath Thuyacontha, Secretary to the Ministry of Defence and Chair of the NAHTTF, emphasized the importance of collective action, stating:
“Human trafficking is not just a crime against an individual; it is a violation of human rights that threatens our society as a whole. This media campaign is a powerful tool to alarm the general public. An informed society is our first line of defense. When communities are aware, they can take proactive steps, report suspicious activity, and create safe environments.”
The campaign also directs the public to the hotline operated by the NAHTTF, encouraging the reporting of suspected cases and access to support services. It forms part of a broader national effort under the National Strategic Action Plan to Monitor and Combat Human Trafficking (2021–2025).
This awareness initiative stands as a powerful example of cross-sector collaboration and international partnership. The NAHTTF and IOM extended their appreciation to the Government of Japan for its vital support through the UPLIFT project, and to all stakeholders whose continued efforts are key to strengthening Sri Lanka’s response to trafficking in persons.
Addressing the event, the Ambassador of Japan to Sri Lanka, H.E. Isomata Akio, emphasized the need for a globally coordinated response to combat trafficking in persons. the Ambassador reaffirmed Japan’s commitment to working with countries of origin, including Sri Lanka, to ensure the prompt protection and social reintegration of victims. Further he highlighted Japan’s support for efforts to prevent forced labour, assist migrant workers, promote vocational training, rescue trafficking victims, and aid their reintegration. He further underlined that prevention is essential to reducing vulnerability in society, stressing the importance of targeted outreach and awareness campaigns at the community level.
